3 Theatrical Escapes in Athens That Linger Like a Dream

Greek translation here

Athens —  a city that breathes drama. This season, the stage is where the real stories unfold: surreal, intimate, and emotionally raw. Whether you’re craving psychological tension, poetic rebellion, or a slow unraveling of identity, these three plays will haunt you in the best way.

Blue Train

The theatrical production BLUE TRAIN by Gerasimos Evangelatos, directed by Giorgos Souleiman, continues for a second season at Alma Theater, every Monday and Tuesday at 21:00. Praised for its authentic and moving approach, the play returns to continue its successful journey, undeterred.

On what seems like an ordinary Sunday, just before his 45th birthday, Michalis receives a series of unexpected visits from four pivotal figures in his life — each forcing him to confront his choices, his fears, and the truths he’s tried to bury.

BLUE TRAIN is a contemporary work that captures the early existential crisis of a generation struggling to preserve its innocence while racing against the relentless passage of time — with humor, tenderness, and emotional depth.

Agrioi

Following its warm reception last season, Agrioi by Giorgos Paloumpis storms back onto the stage at Jenny Karezi Theater starting October 6.

It’s a quiet afternoon in Kypseli, 2025. Inside the apartment of renowned professor Nikos Leontis, a gathering unfolds. His postgraduate students, Maria and Dimitris, are captivated by his latest study — drinking, dreaming, and hoping for a better future. Enthralled by what they believe to be a new manifesto, perhaps even the spark of a radical movement, they’re convinced his work could trigger social and economic upheaval.

But the real disruption won’t come from the outside. It will come from them.

As the evening unravels, rumors resurface, instincts take over, and the line between good and evil begins to blur. Language collapses. Pretenses fall away. Violence and cannibalism take on human form.

Has the moment of truth arrived? And who will deliver justice now?

Maria, Dimitris, Nikos Leontis, the neighbor Eleni, and two unexpected guests. Who are the wild ones? Who are the victims — and who the perpetrators?

Irrina

-not in Athens but…

Three women. Three different versions of Irina. They meet on a day heavy with dual meaning: their 20th birthday — and the one-year anniversary of their father’s death. Their shared dream remains unchanged: to reach Moscow. But “Moscow” isn’t just a place. It’s a symbol, a gesture toward self-realization — a future, a fantasy, a leap into the unknown.

IRЯINA is a new theatrical work in dialogue with Chekhov’s original play. As the youngest and most visionary of the Three Sisters, Irina embodies the timeless figure of the New Woman — one who dares to break convention, challenge boundaries, and imagine a different life. Rooted in the personal and collective memories of the creative team behind the production, and shaped by months of research, the many faces of IRЯINA speak directly to our present and to our contemporary history.

Using movement, storytelling, music, and dance, the performance unfolds as a “rehearsal of memory.” Chekhov’s play is shattered and reassembled through the lived experiences of the women on stage.

Irina no longer waits. She tells her own story.
